Due to Covid-19, numerous families are sheltering and safeguarding in place. That means that many parents/guardians are now working from home while simultaneously trying to juggle homeschooling and caring for their little ones.
A Nanny will be able to assist and reduce the workload for parents/guardians that works from home. It can become confusing for many to have both parents and Nanny present simultaneously. For this reason, we have put together a few tips on how you can work alongside your Nanny while operating from home.
TALK WITH YOUR NANNY
Consistent, honest, and open communication with your Nanny is even more important now because of our current situation (COVID-19). Therefore, scheduling a face to face meeting with your Nanny, without the kids around so that you can cover all bases, is strongly suggested (ideally when they are asleep).
You may want to discuss:
What does your usual workday look like, and your partner’s too, if relevant?
Do you plan to spend time with the children when you take breaks?
What does the children's usual homeschooling routine look like, if applicable?
What activities are suitable for the children? (indoors and outdoors)
What safety measures should everyone participate in to avoid contracting COVID-19 infection; e.g. washing hands, leaving shoes at the door, changing clothes, cleaning surfaces, etc.
After the face to face meetings, establish quick day-to-day check-ins for when your Nanny arrives, or for a specific time if they are with you. Ensure to communicate your expectations for the day for both you and your kids. You should also schedule a few minutes to meet with your Nanny before they leave, too.
REDEVISE AUTHORITY
Your little ones can easily be confused as to who is in charge when both you and your nanny is home. They may be confused about whose permission should they ask for, when it's okay to disrupt you whilst you’re working, and so on. For this reason, it is crucial to work together with your Nanny to reconstruct authority and establish boundaries.
Once again notify and remind your little ones that the Nanny will be in charge whiles you are working. It can be irresistible to give in to your kids, however, back up your Nanny and act as a cohesive front. Support their choices so that your Nanny’s authority is reiterated with the children. In due time, your kids will realize that they need to listen. This will make your Nanny’s job easier.
CREATE AND ESTABLISH DIFFERENT SPACES
If you establish separate areas for their and activities and you work, your little ones are most likely going to get the message and understand that you are working, although you are home.
You may also want to hang a “do not disturb” post on your door for the duration of major conferences or calls. Or, you can also let you Nanny and kids know that you will spend your lunch or breaks with them, but should not be disturbed when working.
Ensure that you designate school and play areas for your kids if they are homeschooling or distance learning. For example, the family/living room can be a place where they can play and a desk or kitchen table is where they can do their school/homework and virtual chatting with their teacher.
